Instructor Bio: | "The love of sewing is our common thread." My Grandma Frieda was my inspiration to learn to sew. As a young child, she would create the most beautiful dresses for my Barbies as well as sew clothes for me. My favorite outfit she stitched was a beige hot pants ensemble in the early 1970's! It was an outfit even Marsha Brady would have envied! Like many teenagers, I wanted clothes and more clothes. My parents informed me that while they could not afford to buy me all the latest styles my heart desired, they would purchase the fabric I wanted. After taking a summer sewing class after the seventh grade, I was gifted with a machine. I will forever cherish the Christmas that I received my Singer "Touch and Sew." As my duties as a mom and a teacher increased, my sewing decreased. My "Touch and Sew" was not touched for many years. Inspired by my neighbor, Leslie Yale, to attempt quilting, I ventured to her house to create my first potholder. I was immediately bitten by the quilting bug. My other neighbor, Nancy Sullivan-Jacobs, also took me under her wing and helped me stitch my first border and applique. It was an honor working on my first "real" quilt-combining efforts with Catherine Cornell, Nancy, and Leslie. The butterfly quilt was a gift to Catherine's mom at the end of her life. As the daughter of an interior designer, I was always fascinated by fabrics. It is the beauty of the bright colors and mixes of various patterns that I adore. Being a teacher who enjoyed math, I adore the geometry involved in designing a quilt. Quilting has opened the door to developing friendships. My stitching brings me peace and nurtures my soul. I liken it to sort of a moving meditation. My quilting brings me joy! Thank you, Leslie! |
